What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is one of the most common sleep-related breathing disorders globally, yet it's normal for patients not to know whether they live with it. Sleep apnea can occur for various reasons, including obesity, hormone changes, and enlarged tonsils. On top of sleep loss, sleep apnea can lead to serious medical complications, including cardiovascular problems and worsened breathing. Some of the most common signs of sleep apnea include:

  • Loud snoring
  • Excessive daytime drowsiness
  • Abrupt awakening during sleep followed by gasping or choking
  • Dry mouth or sore throat upon awakening from sleep
  • Morning headaches
  • Mood changes like depression and irritability
  • High blood pressure
  • Decreased libido

Am I Suffering From Sleep Apnea?

The unique nature of sleep apnea can make it challenging to know whether you're suffering from it. That's why we'll provide you with a questionnaire that gauges your risk for sleep apnea. Our questionnaire covers snoring, observed apnea, blood pressure, body mass index, and neck circumference. In addition, our sleep apnea questionnaire is free of charge.

If we determine that you're at risk of sleep apnea, we'll move forward with the next step in the process, which is to refer you for an at-home sleep study test. This at-home test provides an easy-to-use way to monitor your breathing when you're asleep. Typically, you'll only have to use it for one night, but the sleep doctor may require further testing if the initial results come back inconclusive. Once your results have come back and we understand the severity of your sleep apnea, we'll have you visit our office to create your personalized sleep apnea appliance. Like a mouthguard, our appliances are made for comfort and help keep your airways unobstructed during sleep.

Skilled TMD Treatment

If you're looking for a way to treat TMD, our office is here for you. Our team has extensive experience with TMD and leverages years of experience to address symptoms ranging from ear discomfort to facial swelling. Once we determine the extent of your TMD, we'll create an appliance that helps take the pressure off your facial muscles and eliminate discomfort. It's crucial that you schedule an appointment sooner than later. If you're unsure whether you're dealing with TMD, some of the most commons symptoms include:

  • Pain in the sides of your face
  • Dizziness
  • Neck pain
  • Tinnitus
  • Discomfort while chewing
  • Popping or clicking when opening and closing your jaws
  • Discomfort in and around your ears

Sleep Apnea FAQs

Regardless of your sleep apnea's nature and severity, we'll put all our knowledge and resources to work to improve your quality of life. Our sleep apnea team enjoys answering questions and encourages you to ask them as they come to mind. Some common questions include:

If I snore loudly, do I have sleep apnea?
Loud snoring does not necessarily mean you have sleep apnea. A partial airway blockage causes simple snoring but pauses in breathing do not accompany it. If you're concerned that your snoring is caused by obstructive sleep apnea, call our dental office.

Are oral appliances awkward to wear?
Not at all. Your appliance will be specially designed to fit your mouth perfectly. However, there may be a short period when your body will adjust to the appliance.

Do I have an increased risk of sleep apnea?
Certain individuals are more susceptible to obstructive sleep apnea. Some common risk factors include tobacco use, alcohol consumption, and obesity.
